Students in Jasper, Alberta are in for a treat this week when they receive a visit from 6-time Guinness World Record holder Rob “Frisbee Rob” McLeod, who is a motivational speaker and frisbee ambassador from Calgary.
Rob will be speaking at Jasper Junior & Senior High School on Tuesday & Wednesday, May 9 & 10 and at Jasper Elementary School on Thursday, May 11. He will be speaking to students about Digital Literacy, Unplugging, Kindness, Acceptance, and Determination. He will also be teaching frisbee to students, giving them a look at what is possible with a frisbee and giving them a way to be more active and curious.
On Wednesday evening from 7:30-8:30, Rob will be speaking to parents about the impact excessive screen time has on kids, tips to set limits and controls and devices, and explains some of the most current technologies and websites.
On Friday, May 12, Rob will be running a disc golf workshop for teachers at HPEC 2017 (Health and Physical Education Conference). Disc golf has been growing steadily in Alberta due to the low cost to get started and the appeal to spend more time outside in parks. There are roughly 7,500 players in Alberta with that number growing every year as more courses are added and more people learn about disc golf.
Rob travels all over the world competing in frisbee competitions and has been touring North America for three years sharing his message to over 15,000 kids from Kindergarten to Grade 12. His Resiliency Assembly includes messages of Kindness, Acceptance, Determination and Curiosity and his Digital Literacy Assembly includes messages of Self-Discipline, Empathy and Consequences. He also runs frisbee workshops for students that includes throwing & catching, running and showing the possibilities that exist with a frisbee (100+ throws and infinite catches!).
In addition to his 6 Guinness World Records, Rob also has 10 World Championships and holds the Canadian Distance Record for throwing a flying disc farther than any other Canadian, which is currently 712 feet (more than 2 football fields!).
Rob is passionate about inspiring and encouraging kids to be the best they can be – no matter what that might be. He is also concerned about the amount of time that kids are spending using technology (the average kid spend 7 hours a day in front of a screen and 3 hours playing video games). Rob’s assembly includes a challenge to all students – for them to take one day away from playing Video Games and Watching Netflix, Youtube and TV. If they are successful, Rob will send them a prize. The challenge is called Get Unplugg’d and you can find out more about the challenge including Successes and the Wall of Fame online at http://www.unpluggd.ca.
Rob has also co-authored a children’s book featuring real-life dog Davy Whippet, his canine teammate and best friend. Together they have 2 Guinness World Records. The book is titled The Davy Rule and it teaches kids about acceptance, kindness, determination and self-awareness, aimed at children ages 4-10.
